Currently in the United States of America, child labor laws have been continuously loosened in response to the labor shortage. As a result of these changes, there have been reports of children working long hours in dangerous environments such as meat packing factories and construction.
One such case is a 14 year old girl from Grand Island, Nebraska. She works at a slaughterhouse on the edge of town and sustained injuries from the dangerous working environment. A teacher noticed acid burns on the young girl’s arm and decided to report it to the local police. Shannon Rebolledo, a Labor Department investigator, went to the slaughterhouse to investigate the situation. It was reported that 9 children were found working late nights at the slaughterhouse. These children were working for a cleaning company called PSSI. The company specializes in food safety and sanitation. The Labor Department did more investigation into the company and found 102 minors working illegally across 8 different states. Last November, the Labor Department filed a lawsuit against PSSI, and according to CBS, “It did not dispute the finding that it hired children. PSSI promised not to do so in the future and agreed to regular audits”.
