Become A Volunteer

It is almost that time of the year; college applications are in progress. Hopefully, everyone has their grades up and their GPAs are through the ceiling. However, lets not forget about volunteer hours. Colleges love seeing applications that list volunteer hours and for students who haven’t started building up hours, here is a list of places looking for high school helpers.

 

Sioux Falls Sanford Health has a wide range of volunteer opportunities from Canine Ambassador to Surgical Services. Sanford requires volunteers to commit to at least a 3 hour biweekly shift. Avera McKennan hospital based in Sioux Falls, is also looking for volunteers. They have volunteer openings for students to be  patient escorts, emergency service workers, and more. Both hospitals require volunteers to be 16 years old however in certain departments volunteers must be 19 years old. These are both great places for people who are interested in the medical field.

 

The Banquet, a dining hall located just off 8th street, provides meals for those who can’t obtain them. They are looking for volunteers to serve food, wash dishes, and wait on guests.  The Banquet takes groups of people to volunteer and also individuals to help serve breakfast and supper. There are also combine opportunities for younger people such as collecting tokens from the guests. Online the Banquet has a calendar showing which days they are in need of extra help.  

 

The homeless can find temporary shelter at the St. Francis House. The house is a home for people that have the drive to get back on their feet. The shelter works to help people become independent again and volunteers help by providing meals, cleaning, or doing yard work outside. The people living in the shelter are very appreciative of all the help.
