Could This Cost Us Our Night Sky?

POSTED January 16, 2020

SpaceX sent out 60 satellites into outer space in May but astronomers are against the idea of too many satellites being launched into space. Astronomers see the satellites as a menace to nocturnal animals and some of their equipment because of the satellites bright lights. Sending more satellites into outer space will effect the night sky.

Unfortunately SpaceX is planning to launch 1,000 satellites over the year of 2020 and let me remind you that there are over 2,000 satellites blanketing outer space. That means there are four times more satellites than there are stars in the sky.

SpaceX is trying to get on astronomers good side by saying they could paint the satellites black so they won’t disturb the astronomers equipment. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX believes that the use of more satellites won’t impact astronomy, but instead benefit mankind by connecting the world by internet. But this might just be what’s costing us our night sky.

I think that the risks of this 2020 excursion from SpaceX exceed the better connection in the world the CEO wants. I believe that it is a real possibility that more satelites, in such a large amount no less, could likely negatively impact the environment and nocturnal animals. This scares me, pesonally, because I love the Earth, and I hate how people are ruining it. This is a very interesting topic, and I hope it changes some minds.
