One Day, Thirteen Tornadoes: Tragedy Strikes in Iowa

On Saturday, March 10, 2022, 13 tornadoes ravage the midwest, specifically causing extreme damage and even some fatalities in Iowa. A total of seven people died in the storms including two children. On Wednesday the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in the following areas:

  • Winterset/ Newton: EF-4 on the ground for 69.5 miles from 4: 26 pm to 6:01 pm. Wind speeds of 170 mph, Width of 800 yards, 6 deaths, and 5 people injured.
  • Garden Grove/ Humeston: EF-2 on the ground 19.1 miles from 5:07 pm to 5:34 pm. Wind speeds of 122 mph, the width was undetermined, no injuries or deaths occurred.
  • Chariton/ Red Haw State Park: EF-3 on the ground for 16.5 miles from 5:30 pm to 5:54 pm. Wind speeds of 138 mph, the width was undetermined, One death was associated with this tornado.
  • Allerton/ Corydon: EF-2 on the ground for 7.5 miles from 5:38 pm to 5:48 pm. Wind speeds of 118 mph, the width was undetermined, no injuries or deaths
  • Kellogg: EF-2 on the ground for 17.4 miles from 6:04 pm to 6:29 pm. Width of 400 yards, wind speeds of 112 mph, no injuries or deaths.
  • Tama: EF-Unknown on the ground for 1.5 miles between 3:38 pm and 3:40 pm. Width and wind speeds are unknown, no injuries or deaths.
  • Cromwell: EF-0 on the ground for 3.4 miles from 4:01 pm to 4:06 pm. Wind speeds of 72 mph, Width was undetermined, no injuries or deaths. 
  • Corning: EF- Unknown on the ground 1.5 miles between 3:38 pm to 3:40 pm. Width and wind speeds were unknown, no injuries or deaths.
  • Derby: EF-1 on the ground for 3.6 miles between 5:26 pm to 5:31 pm. Wind speeds of 100 mph, the width was undetermined, no injuries or deaths.
  • Chariton: EF-0 on the ground for 1.9 miles from 5:40 pm to 5:42 pm. Wind speeds of less than 72 mph, Width was undetermined, no injuries or deaths.
  • Vinton: Ef-1 on the ground for 14 miles from 7:10 pm to 7:26 pm. Wind speeds of 110 mph, the width of 400 yards, no injuries or deaths.
  • West Davenport 1: EF-1 on the ground for 4.16 miles from 8:37 pm to 8:41 pm. Wind speeds of 100 mph, the width of 300 yards, no injuries or deaths.
  • West Davenport 2: EF-0 on the ground 0.12 miles from 8:37 pm to 3:38 pm. Winds speeds of 65 mph, the width was 25 yards, no injuries or deaths.
