Second Public Execution in Iran

Early December 12th, 23-year-old Majidreza Rahnavard was publicly hanged from a construction crane in Iran. This brutal execution happened less than a month after he was arrested for allegedly stabbing two security force members to death on November 17th. According to The Washington Post, “A heavily edited state television report aired after Rahnavard’s execution showed clips of him in the courtroom. In the video, he says he came to hate the Basijis (a volunteer military in Iran) after seeing video clips on social media of the forces beating and killing protesters.” Before the execution, Majidreza Rahnavard’s mother visited him in jail but was not told of his execution until afterward. Then his family was given the name of the cemetery he was to be buried and the plot number. Over 400 people have been killed in Iran since the protests started in September and over 18,000 people have been detained by authorities.
