Chinese balloon shot down raises Concern

Brody Bohnet, Writer

On February 4th, 2023 the US sent up two U-2 spy planes to shoot down a suspicious balloon, later identified to be from the Chinese government.  The department of defense revealed the size of the Chinese balloon was bigger than the Statue of Liberty, which is 151 feet tall from the base of the statue to the tip of the torch. This balloon was suspected to be a spy balloon that the Chinese government was using to spy on the US from high altitudes.  According to CBS news, “The US government didn’t shoot the balloon down right away was a concern about debris.” The Chinese government claims that the balloon was used for weather patterns. The balloon landed in the ocean and the US Navy collected the balloon successfully.

Since this event, three other balloons were shot down across North America. The recovery of those balloons is still ongoing.
