Some Background Info-
The Sioux Falls Humane Society is at full capacity and will not be accepting owner surrenders for the next few weeks. One reason for the fullness of the shelter may be because there are some pets that are harder to adopt out such as 1-2 year old puppies. Though they are nearly full grown, they still have puppy tendencies. There is also no limit for the stay at the Sioux Falls Humane Society, they can stay as long as they need to, but, if they aren’t getting any attention from the public, the Humane Society might ask a rescue group to take them. The average length of stay for the animals is around 13 days.
Advice on the Right Pet for You-
A very active family will be a great fit for a high energy dog, the same with how a low energy dog will be great for a less active family.
“Each animal is an individual, and it all depends on the personality and time that the family is willing to put into their pet”, said Dana Konzen, the Community Outreach Director of the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
It is recommended that you research the type of animal you are interested in adopting and knowing the type of responsibility that is needed.
Adoption Process-
The adoption process is pretty straightforward and fairly simple. When you come to the shelter, you will have to fill out an easy one page application, which will be good for 90 days. The adoption counselors will then look into the type of pet you are looking for and make suggestions on which one is the best fit for you. If you already have a dog at home, the Humane Society does require introductions between the two animals led by staff. Then, you will finish the paperwork and be on your way.
The Adoption Fees-
The adoption fees range from $45-$600 depending on the type of animal you are interested in getting. You would also have to take the pet to the vet where the price can range from $200-$600 each visit, you also have the cost of pet food, toys and litter boxes.
Support-
If you aren’t able to adopt but are still looking for ways to help, there is fostering. You can take a litter of cats home for a 2 to 8 week time-frame until they are ready for adoption. The Sioux Falls Humane Society also accepts donations from cat and dog food to toys and treats for the animals. It takes 3.3 million dollars to keep the shelter up and running each year, so any type of donation can go a long way.
Shout-out to Dana Konzen for answering our questions and letting us take some pictures of the Shelter. Here is another shout-out to The Sioux Falls Humane Society for doing so much for these amazing animals.

Informative and well-written article calling for community support. I enhoyed how the writer focused on multiple ways to support the Human Society, and tips for pet adoption. I was also mpressed with the level of professionalism in what could have been a “fluff peice.”
