Late at night on Thursday, October 10, two people died during a shooting at a local gas station. A 23-year-old man stated he was jumped earlier that night, and then thought that those responsible were a group of motorcyclists at a different location. The 23-year-old went to his parents house and told them about being jumped earlier that night. According to Keloland, “Court documents say someone told them the people who’d assaulted him were near 41st Street and South Sertoma Avenue, about four miles from the home. ” After this tip, the 23-year-old returned to the Kum and Go gas station, near this intersection, along with his 44-year-old father, 14-year-old brother, and his 42-year-old mother who was in a separate car.
The three adults ended up confronting a group of motorcyclists, each with bats. The 23-year-old swung a bat at a 26-year-old motorcyclist, who in return, shot the 23-year-old. According to police, the 44-year-old man was also swinging a bat at the 26-year-old, who shot him a moment after. Police said after the two men were shot, the woman ended up pointing a gun at the 26-year-old, he shot her as well.
Sioux Falls police officer Sam Clemens stated, “It was a case of mistaken identity.” The 26-year-old motorcyclist has been cooperative with police, there have been no current arrest attempts towards him. Court documents said the 26-year-old fired his gun in “self-defense” while ducking to avoid being hit with the bat. Court documents also stated that the 44-year-old man was found with four gunshot wounds in his back.
The 42-year-old woman that was shot, went to the hospital to be treated and released. However, for her, an arrest warrant was made for aggravated assault charges.
The shooting occurred at the 41st street Kum and Go gas station, right across the street from Roosevelt High School.
