On Monday, November 12, 2024, a ‘dead whale’ was discovered on the shoreline of the Caspian Sea.
The 52-foot sperm whale was found beached next to the world’s largest lake in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku. Its unexpected appearance is appalling to locals since sperm whales can not live in lakes. Although it looks like an actual whale, it is a hyper-realistic model created using molds from real whales and stashed buckets of fish nearby for the added mirage of a decaying sea creature. The organization responsible for the large statement is Captain Boomer. Captain Boomer is a Belgian-based group that aims to raise awareness of extensive environmental damage and human-induced climate crisis. This organization consists of actors, sculptures, and scientists.
Although the model was created about a decade ago, it has journeyed from cities and coasts from Europe to Australia to help raise awareness of the impact global warming has on sea creatures. The city will host a climate summit and international leaders will arrive to discuss ways to address the ongoing climate crisis. The collective has decided to keep the sculpture there for the entirety of the conference with the approval of Azerbaijani authorities.
