Officials from the US Food and Drug Administration released a proposal on Wednesday, January 15th, hoping to reduce the addictiveness of cigarettes. Even though the plan is newly released, there is much speculation about the future of this proposed rule due to the transition of power in the US government within the next week. The plan is to cap the nicotine levels in cigarettes at a place where people can’t sustain or create an addiction to the substance. The agency will wait nine months before further action and leave space for public comments. “This action, if finalized, could save many lives and dramatically reduce the burden of severe illness and disability,” said FDA Commissioner Robert Calilff.
