Roosevelt High School is a mixing pot of backgrounds, demographics, people, and cultures. However, the diversity isn’t a reason to separate us whatsoever. Our differences can act to unify us as we celebrate the distinct parts of what makes each of our students themselves. This very kind of celebration is happening February 24th through 28th with Culture Week!
Culture day, on the 28th, is a developing event celebrated at Roosevelt High School, but this year, it is reaching a new height. Cultural clubs such as RHS Black Student Union and Asian Student Union are collaborating to truly express RHS’ diversity. With the introduction of RHS Culture Week, the festivities throughout the week, dress-up days, games, and pep rally tie together in celebration of our school’s diversity and culture.
On Tuesday February 25th, there will be Native American hand games for students to play in the gymnasium during WINTIME. Additionally, students will be serving ethnic foods from their culture during lunch on Wednesday. To try some free cultural food, students should RSVP on Monday.
But what does diversity and culture exactly mean at RHS? By dictionary, diversity is defined as variety. But when you look closer into the RHS community, students will prove that diversity means something much more remarkable than just simple differences.
Asian Student Union Co-President, Emily Vo, speaks on what diversity means. For her, it means, “Being able to see everyone for their backgrounds and what makes them, well them!” She continues, “If there was no diversity, we would not be able to know about other parts of the world, who they are, and why they celebrate.” Within our community, diversity is an aspect of each individual that shows identity. For many, it means a way of life, a background to be proud of, and a reason to celebrate.
On the subject of celebration, RHS Culture Week offers a number of festivities throughout the week for students to explore different cultures. The dress-up days are detailed below.
As we anticipate a spirit week filled with diversity and expression, I ask readers to consider some advice: It is especially important that this week we learn, we appreciate, and we also celebrate the amazing cultures and identities that we have at RHS.
