On January 22nd, 2025 in Bavaria, Germany two people, including a two year old boy and a 41 year old man, were killed in a knife attack. The attack also left three others injured. AP News states, “The suspect, a former asylum-seeker who was supposed to be leaving Germany, was arrested.” The incident happened just before noon at a park in Aschaffenburg, Germany, a city of about 72,000 people. According to AP News, “Bavaria’s top security official, Joachim Herman, said the assailant attacked the boy, who was part of a group of kindergarten children, with a kitchen knife.” The 2 year old boy was killed along with 41 year old man who was also killed in the attack after intervening to protect the other kids. AP News states, “Bavarian officials said two adults and a 2-year-old Syrian girl were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, and none of their lives were in danger.” The two year old girl endured stab wounds to her neck, and a 72 year old man suffered serious stab wounds. The suspect was arrested 12 minutes after the attack. The 28 year old Afghan national has caught authorities’ attention for acts of violence at least three times. In the past he has received psychiatric treatment and was later released. As reported by BBC, “Friedrich Merz promised in effect to close Germany’s borders to all irregular migrants, including those with a right to protection.” The German authorities will continue to investigate and give more answers to this tragic attack.
