Jetfuel fills the North Sea after a cargo ship and an oil tanker collided off the eastern coast of the UK on Monday, March 10th around 5:00 am CST. The fire caused by the collision triggered an emergency response from multiple different agencies.
While 36 crew members were brought back to shore safely, one person was unaccounted for. According to CNN, an “extensive” search for the missing crew member was launched but ended Monday night as the missing person was declared lost by the British Coast Guard. The Solong, the cargo vessel involved, was carrying “an unknown quantity of alcohol and 15 containers of sodium cyanide”. It has not yet been determined if the cyanide has entered the water.
A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter that may have led to the collision. Although the man has not yet been found guilty, a criminal investigation has been opened to determine what happened.
