This past week, the Indo-Pakistani conflict has heated up more and more. Just this Thursday, May 18th, attack drones were fired from India into Pakistan which resulted in the death of at least two civilians. The day before that, Indian missiles were responsible for claiming 31 civilians, as said by Pakistani officials. The exchange of attacks and aggression between the two nations, however, isn’t a recently-generated affair. Since the time India gained independence from Britain in 1947, India and Pakistan have had three full-scale wars as well as numerous skirmishes. With a history of conflict and the aggression that exists between the two countries today, many people fear another full-scale war that could pull other countries, innocent lives, and even use of nuclear weapons in the future. However, it may also be the very same nuclear arsenals of the countries striking fear that act as a deterrent from major conflict. From Islamabad, Pakistan, Security analyst Syed Mohammed Ali includes, “Their nuclear weapons create a scenario for mutually assured destruction.” Sensibly so, the power they both hold over one another could be preventing either country from becoming too aggressive in their conflicts. As time goes on, it is hopeful that the conflict will cease rather than stir any further.
