On December 31, 2022, the previous Pope Benedict XVI passed away at age 95, just days after his illness was announced by Pope Francis. He passed away in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican at 9:34 in the morning. His funeral occurred on January 5, 2023. More than 50,000 people came to pay their respect. “Saddened to learn of the demise of His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI,” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola tweeted, “Europe mourns him. May he rest in peace.”
