Biden Administration Says Yes to the Willow Project

On Monday, March 13, 2023, the Biden Administration approved the ConocoPhillips’ Willow Project, an oil drilling project into the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. Their project is to dig up 600 million barrels of oil and use it to support the U.S. dependence on oil. It would generate 9.2 million metric tons of carbon pollution. Even after there had been a compromise to this plan in which the Biden Administration changed the number of drilling platforms from five to three, many people are upset about this decision because of how much it will harm the environment. However, even with all of the controversy over this decision, some politicians are very confident about this project. “This was the right decision for Alaska and our nation,” ConocoPhillips chairman and chief executive officer Ryan Lance stated. “Willow fits within the Biden Administration’s priorities on the environmental and social justice, facilitating the energy transition and enhancing our energy security, all while creating good union jobs and providing benefits to Alaska Native communities.”
