On April 4, 2023, the U.K. Watchdog organization (The Information Commissioner’s Office) issued a fine against the popular social media TikTok. They fined the platform 12.7 million pounds ($15.9 million dollars) for allowing 1.4 million children under the age of 13 onto the app. The reason why many people are upset about this is that it goes against the community guidelines on the app and poses a threat to data privacy and cybersecurity. “TikTok should have known better. TikTok should have done better, “Information Commissioner John Edwards said during a press release. He also stated that the fine “reflects the serious impact their failures may have had. They did not do enough to check who was using their platform or take sufficient action to remove the underage children that were using their platform.”
