“Kindness is like sugar, it makes life taste a little sweeter. “- Carla Yerovi. Basically everyone loves candy. Could be chocolate, hard candy, gummy candies, whatever. But people normally focus only on the candy brands that surround them, whether it’s because it’s popular where you live or because you grew up around it. Not a lot of people think about what candy is like in different countries and regions of the world. We got a hold of some of the most popular candies from different parts of the world, and got Americans reviews and opinions on them. Here’s what we gathered:
The candies we got our hands on would be the following:
Ahlgrens Bilar, from Sweden-
Malang Cow, from Korea-
Mishka Kosolapy, from Russia-
Grape Hi-Chew, from Japan-
Every one of the candies had rather similar reactions/opinions, and some are more positive or negative than others. People reviewed the taste, texture, and consistency of the candy. Here are the overall ratings of the candies.
Malang Cow-Korean candy
Malang cow was the most disliked candy. The two flavors
that were available were “Milk” and “Strawberry”. People thought this
candy was going to be more of a taffy, which they aren’t wrong, but
they aren’t really right either. This candy was described as very flavorful, but had a rather awkward texture and consistency compared to other taffy candies.
Ahlgrens Bilar-Swedish candy
Ahlgrens Bilar ranked in the middle for a people favorite. This
candy was described as, “not bad, but not the best either”. Bilar is
more of a gummy type candy, with 3 different but similar flavors,
(not listed), inside of the bag. The candy was more rough to bite
through, but still had a gummy texture and consistency. Each gummy
has a unique shape as well. However, nobody could really tell what
they think it’s shaped like.
Mishka Kosolapy-Russian Candy
Mishka Kosolapy was more of a favorite for people. This was a
dark chocolate wafer, with a crispy structure. The chocolate
was described as more of a rich chocolate, and the wafer added
a good crunch consistency to the chocolate. The packaging for this
candy was by far the most creative. With an interesting technique for
the initial wrapping of the chocolate and colorful images on the face of the wrapper.
Hi-Chew-Japanese Candy
Hi-Chew did the best in all of the categories that we
scored. This candy was described as a very flavorful taffy.
The first bite of the candy is rather rough, but it was said to
almost “melt” while being chewed. The taffy has a good consistency,
lots of flavor, and it doesn’t stick to your teeth!
After having multiple people try all of these foreign candies, Hi-Chew was the overall winner. With a wonderful flavor, and a soft chewy texture. Hi-Chew is definitely a candy that almost anyone can love.
Through testing these different candies and listening to people’s reactions, we can conclude that candy is very diverse throughout the world, and they’re always going to be different from country to country. Candy fits in with traditions around the world, and it’s interesting to see how different they are from what you may have in your country. After reading this review, we hope you become curious about foreign candies, and try some for yourself!
