Earth has captured a “new moon” on September 29th but it won’t be staying for long.
A small asteroid was pulled into Earth’s gravitational field, causing it to become a “mini-moon” for several months. The asteroid is about 32 feet long; it is minimal compared to our moon. Unfortunately, it will not be visible due to the small size and dimness. The only way to experience this rare phenomenon is to gaze through a professional telescope.
The asteroid, referred to as 2024 PT5 by scientists, comes from the Arjuna asteroid belt, which consists of rocks that orbit similarly to Earth. Although a big space rock approaching Earth sounds scary, according to Global News, “ scientists say there’s no danger and 2024 PT5 is not on a collision course with our planet”.
