Germany’s transport workers strike for better pay

Cecelia Hillyer, Writer

German public transport workers are currently on strike as they demand an increase in pay to offset inflation. The union representatives for transport workers in six different regions organized the strike on March 3rd. This is causing disturbance for Germany’s flight and train schedules. Until recently, Germany has been reliant on Russia for most of their gas and oil. Due to the war in Ukraine, Germany is one of the many European countries who have been hit with inflation. One of the unions, Verdi, demanded a 10.5% raise to pay for the rising food and energy prices. Verdi is speaking for almost 2.5 million workers. Although there are also protests and strikes in France, officials in Germany say their strike is only about pay.
